2001 Dodge Neon Brake Booster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Booster on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Before doing anything else to the vacuum brake booster, cut off the negative wire from the battery and isolate that end. Cancelthe bolt and nut holding the air cleaner box, unconnect the wire at the backside of the air inlet sensor and lift the air cleaner box to reach the bolts securing the battery tray. Take out two bolts and two nuts that hold the battery tray in place and then remove the tray. Use the brake pedal 4 to 5 times after turning the engine off to drain the power brake booster vacuum before removing the master cylinder. When the motorcycle has ABS, take out the Integrated Control Unit by unbolting the three bracket screws. Take off the vacuum hoses connected to the check valve on the power brake booster, without removing the check valve from its place. Locate the input end of the brake pedal-to-power brake booster rod under the instrument panel. Next, unclip the rod by removing the retaining clip with a small screwdriver, toss out the old clip and install a new clip when you assemble the system again. Take out the four nuts holding the brake booster to the instrument panel, found under the panel near the brake pedal bracket and then slide the booster forward to remove it. During installation, position the power brake booster on its side and install it in the engine section, so the studs and rod are in line with the instrument panel. Place the four mounting nuts under the instrument panel and tighten them to 34 Nm or 300 inch lbs. Use Lubriplate or an alternative on the brake pedal pin, secure the input rod to it using a new clip and attach a new brake lamp switch. Fix the vacuum hoseings to the vacuum check valve, set up the ABS ICU mounting bracket if required, bolting it on securely and lastly reinstall the ICU. Fasten the master cylinder, complete the installation of your battery and secure the tray again with two bolts and nuts tightened at 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Secure the air cleaner box back into position, join it with one nut and one bolt and install the wiring harness into the sensor opening at the air inlet. To complete, put in the battery, hook up both lead cables, bleed the primary brakes and check the brakes during a road test.
