2001 Dodge Neon Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Parking Brake Cable on 2001 Dodge Neon?
A: Do not remove your foot from the parking brake lever before blocking your wheels to keep the car from rolling. Pull up the parking brake lever and put the gear-selector into neutral mode. Undo the screws and the center console and lower the parking brake lever. Grab the parking brake lever output and pull it up with enough force so a pin punch can fit through the gear and right side of its bracket to lock the adjustment mechanism. Detach the parking brake cable equalizer from both rear parking brake lines and next, remove the rear seat cushion. Fold back the carpeting in the rear to get to the parking brake cables located on the floor. Crush the parking brake cable retainer with a 1/2 inch wrench and remove the cable housing from the bracket. Raise the car and take out the rear wheel and tire. If your car's brakes are rear drums, start by removing the drum; if they are disc brakes, remove the guide pin bolts, hang the caliper and then take the rotor. Take the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing and then remove the retaining nut and the hub and bearing. In rear brake vehicles, loosen the parking brake cable clamp and unscrew the cable at the rear brake support using a 1/2 inch box wrench. For vehicles with rear disc brakes, take out the parking brake lever and free the cable from the rear disc brake adapter by turning the wheel opposite with a 1/2 inch offset box wrench. Take off the parking brake cable and sealing grommet from the floor pan, then un screw the parking brake cable routing bracket and neck nuts from the tension strut. While installing, put the parking brake cable through the floor pan hole, maintaining that the sealing grommet is in place. Join the parking brake cable routing bracket to the tension strut bolts and apply a torque of 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Put the parking brake cable into the brake support plate or rear disc brake adapter, stretching out the locking fingers on the retainer. When working on rear drum brakes, place the parking brake cable on both the actuating lever and the actuating spring. On rear disc brake vehicles, join the parking brake shoes actuator lever and the parking brake shoe assemblies. The rear spindle should get the new bearing hub and retaining nut tightened to 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.) and should finish with the dust cap. Reattach the rear brake drum or put back the brake rotor and caliper after brushing away the debris, tightening the caliper guide pin bolts to 22 Nm (192 inch lbs.). Connect the rear tire and wheel, using a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) on the wheel nuts and then let the vehicle down again. See that the seal grommet goes all the way into the floor pan and run the parking brake cable below the carpeting to tighten it on the retaining bracket. Join the parking brake cables at the equalizer located on the parking brake lever's output cable for correct alignment. Release the lock on the limit adjuster by removing the parking brake lever pin punch which lets the mechanism move the cables. Lift the parking brake lever only once to position the cables, making sure the rear wheels turn easily once released. Move the rear carpet into place, attach the rear seat cushion with its screws, completely push down the parking brake lever and then firmly hold the center console with its screws as you remove the blocks from the tires and wheels.
