2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Pads on the Front Disc on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before performing a front disc brake pad service, ensure that the vehicle is raised and supported and then take off the wheel and tire. Remove a little brake fluid from the master cylinder using a clean suction gun. Press the guide-pin tool on the caliper piston and work it down into the caliper to remove the piston. Then, pull the caliper support spring from the bottom of the caliper. Then, loosen the caps above the slide pin bushings, along with the slide pins and caliper slide pins and remove the caliper from the anchor. Attach the caliper to a suspension part next to it with wire, so the brake hose does not help hold up the caliper's weight. Pull the inboard brake pad out from the caliper and remove the outboard brake pad from the caliper anchor. Install the inboard brake pad onto the caliper and put the outboard pad onto the caliper anchor for best results. Coat the slide pins and slide pin bushings with Dow Corning G807 grease or the greas where provided with the brake pads. Afterward, secure the caliper on the caliper anchor. Screw the slide pin to 29 - 41 Nm (21 - 30 ft. lbs.) and put in the caliper slide pin bushing caps. Take the first end of the spring and put it into the top of the caliper, as well as under the anchor and clip the other end into the lower hole of the caliper by holding it there with your thumb and pushing down on it with a screwdriver through the anchor hole. Put the wheel and tire back in place, lift the support arm and then lower the vehicle. Press down on the pedal slowly until the calipers are pushed all the way, the brakes feel firm and you can pour brake fluid into the reservoir.
