2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on Rear Disc Brakes on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: We need to begin by raising and supporting the vehicle, take off the rear wheel and tire assembly and then continue with the work. Take out a bit of fluid from the master brake cylinder using a clean suction gun. Raise the caliper to the bottom by using your hands on the piston and then remove its banjo bolt and throw away the gasket washers. Push the caliper support spring out of the caliper to take it out. Once the slide pin clamp is secure, take the caps off the caliper slide pin bushing and remove the pins before you take the caliper off. Undo the brake pad on the inner side. The first step in installation is to put on the inboard brake pad, then coat both the slide pins and the slide pin bushings with Dow Corning grease G807 or the caliper's grease. Secure the caliper on the anchor, put in the slide pin and tighten it between 29 and 41 Nm (21 - 30 ft. lbs.). Change the caps on the caliper slide pin and then insert the caliper support spring into the upper side of the caliper and the other end under the anchor, using a screwdriver to help hold the spring in the right place. Before tightening the fitting bolt, uncrumple the brake hose so it is straight, then attach the hose to the caliper using new gasket washers and secure it with the banjo bolt pulled up to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Next, place brake fluid in the system, insert the wheels and tires and finally raise the vehicle until it is ready for support removal.
