2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser A/C Accumulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the A/C Accumulator in Your HVAC System on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before servicing the accumulator in the HVAC system, you should recover the refrigerant from the refrigerant system. Take the battery's negative cable and disconnect it from the proper connector. If required, shift the speed control servo to give easier access to the accumulator. Don't include the low pressure cycling switch in the accumulator. Following tip 1, take out the two screws holding the suction and liquid line assembly's refrigerant line fittings on the accumulator connector block and remove the fittings from the ports. Take out the O-ring seal from the refrigerant line fittings, along with the rubber O-ring from the refrigerant line and place tape or plugs over the open ends of both accumulator connector block ports and the fittings. Detach the screw that holds the accumulator mounting bracket to the right side rail and then take the accumulator out of the engine compartment. While installing, put the accumulator back in the engine compartment and tighten the screw for the mounting bracket to 11.3 Nm (100 in. lbs.). Remove the tape or plugs from both ends of the accumulator connector block and the connections on the refrigerant lines. Follow the instructions and lubricate rubber O-ring seals with clean oil designed for the vehicle's compressor before attaching them to the right fittings of the R-134a line. Bring the refrigerant line fittings back to the accumulator connector block and connect the inlet and outlet ports. Then properly install and tighten both screws to 2.3 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Connect the low pressure clutch "switch" cycling switch to the accumulator and if you have one, reinstall the vehicle speed control servo onto the unit. Screw in the negative battery cable, remove all the refrigerant and add 89 milliliters (3 fluid ounces) of the required refrigerant oil to the refrigerant system if you put in a new accumulator.
