2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser Evaporator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Replace an Evaporator on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before changing the A/C evaporator on vehicles with air bags, disconnect the negative battery cable and empty the coolant from the vehicle. Take out the refrigerant system and the next step is removing the instrument panel. After that, release the retaining bolt from the line near the expansion valve and separate the refrigerant lines, then disconnect the electrical connector from the base of the expansion valve. Take out the expansion valve retaining bolts and free the valve from the vehicle. Separate the coolant hoses from the heater core, then in the engine compartment, take out the A/C-Heater housing retaining bolts and the drain tube, also bringing out the hose from its nipple. While you are inside, unhook the defroster duct and undo the bolts and connections at the front of the A/C-Heater housing to lift and set it on a workbench. Taken off the heater core cover and coolant hoses and then break down the A/C-Heater housing to remove the evaporator coil. To install, slide the new evaporator coil into the A/C-Heater housing, making sure all seals are correctly set, then take apart the housing and put it back in the car, fastening it with retaining bolts at 20 Nm (177 in. lbs.). After that, join the electrical cables, fit the defroster duct and attach the clip that retains the housing's drain tube. Connect the two heater core supply hoses, install the expansion valve with its gasket and corresponding bolts tightened to 11 Nm and make the electrical connection from the expansion valve. Connect the refrigerant lines and fasten them with a bolt that is torqued to 23 Nm (203 in. lbs.). Lubricate the O-rings and verify they aren't damaged. After that, reconnect the instrument panel, evacuate the refrigerant, charge the system, refill the cooling system and put the negative battery cable back.
