2002 Jeep Wrangler Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Air Bag Systems Be Safely Serviced on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To maintain the air bag system, begin with cutting battery power by pulling out the battery's negative cable and then wait at least two minutes for the system's capacitor to discharge. air bags may be coated with irritants after being used in a crash, so you should always protect your skin and eyes by putting on rubber gloves and protecting your arms with a shirt while handling the air bag. The horn switch belongs to the driver air bag unit and must be serviced by professionals with the right training and qualifications to stop inaccurate air bag deployment. Be sure no foreign objects, no matter how small, enter the driver air bag or get underneath the air bag cushion and trim cover. It is very important that the air bag trim is not painted due to how that might affect its safety. Before replacing the driver air bag, detach the negative battery cable and, if the air bag was not set off, let it rest for two minutes. Get rid of the two screws connecting the driver air bag to the steering wheel, pull the air bag away and you will find the wire harness connectors. Take out the Clock Spring horn switch pigtail connector and remove the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connector from the air bag inflator receptacle. Eliminate the driver air bag from the steering wheel. After an air bag deployment, you must replace the Clock Spring. First, put the driver air bag trim cover on the air bag housing, reconnect the Clock Spring driver air bag wire connector until an audible click is heard and then connect the horn switch wire connector. Adjust the position of the driver air bag so it doesn't squeeze any wire in the steering wheel and then attach and tighten both screws to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). Do not put back the air bag wire until the air bag system verification test is complete.
