2002 Jeep Wrangler Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Clock Spring Assembly on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Turn off the air bag system by pulling out and disconnecting the battery negative cable and after that, allow about two minutes for the air bag system capacitor to discharge. Make sure the steering wheel is straight until you can see that the front wheels are going forward. Discard the driver air bag from the steering wheel, take the upper Clock Spring connector off if it is present and remove the screw binding the steering wheel armature to the upper part of the steering column. With a steering wheel puller (Special Tool C-3428-B), take the steering wheel off the upper shaft spline and remove the cover from the steering column opening in the instrument panel. Extract the two screws that attach the lower shroud to the upper shroud and on a tilt steering column, set the lower shroud so the column is down. Lift out the upper and lower shrouds around the steering column. Unplug the two cross body wire harness connectors from underneath the steering wheel and next, push the two plastic releases at the bottom of the column to remove the entire Clock Spring assembly. For reusing the Clock Spring, use a hard wire through the small index hole to keep the rotor of the Clock Spring aligned to the case. When you install the Clock Spring, make sure it is centered; service replacement pieces already have a locking pin for the center that shouldn't be removed until you start the installation. Before reinstalling a removed Clock Spring, take out the wire that keeps the rotor in place. Slide the Clock Spring over the steering column upper shaft, making the two latches click, attach the wires and put on the steering column upper and lower shrouds, ensuring the watershields engage properly. Use two screws at 2 Nm (18 in. lbs.) to fasten the lower shroud, tilt the steering column if it's equipped and insert the steering column opening cover. If you've replaced the Clock Spring, release the locking pin, reinstall the wheel, check that it lines up with the Clock Spring and feed the top pigtail wires through the lower one in the armature. Tighten the screw holding the steering wheel to the upper shaft to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), making sure none of the wires are crushed and then connect the upper pigtail cable if your vehicle has it. Then, finalize by adding the driver air bag back to the steering wheel.
