2002 Jeep Wrangler Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair Brake Calipers on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing or repairing disc brake calipers, separate the brake shoes and remove the brake fluid from the caliper. Cushion and cover the piston in the outboard shoe of the caliper with a one-inch thick shop towel, taped in place and kept to the front. Direct a straight line of low-pressure compressed air into the caliper's liquid entrance for a short time to ease the piston out of the bore, follow the rule of not holding the piston as it leaves the bore and never risk getting injured catching it. To access the caliper piston, lift out the dust boots with the suitable pry tool and use a wood or plastic object to remove the seal to be safe with the piston. After that, take out the caliper mounting bolt bushings and boots. Before assembly, wipe off any dirt and allow the area to dry so caliper seals remain safe. Use clean brake fluid to lubricate the caliper piston bore, new piston seal and piston and rub silicone grease inside the caliper bushings and their boots. Instead of using lubricant, put the bushing boots in the caliper, insert the bushings into the boots and press them gently into place. Put the new piston seal into the groove using only your finger and after that, install the new dust boot onto the caliper piston until it fits snugly into the slot. Using a hand turning and pushing motion, press the piston into the braking bore until it shows at the bottom. Install the dust boot into the caliper using Tools C-4842 and C-4171 and, if the caliper bleed screw was removed, replace it as well.
