- Q: How to Service and Repair a Muffler on 2003 Dodge Durango?A: For repairs or servicing the muffler, first unplug the negative battery cable and lift the vehicle on a hoist. Unscrew the clamps connecting the tailpipe to the catalytic converter and the tailpipe from the exhaust pipe, remove the muffler and then heat the part connecting the tailpipe to the hanger isolator using an oxygen/acetylene torch, pulling the tailpipe out of the muffler as you twist it. Continuing, unhook the muffler from the isolators and heat the muffler at the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter connection to turn it off the converter pipe. To install the muffler, attach it to the exhaust pipe/catalytic converter and tailpipe and use the clamps and start turning the nuts by hand. Attach the muffler to the rear muffler mount and connect the tailpipe to the rear hanger, checking that everything is properly centered as you tighten the exhaust clamp nuts to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Still, bring the car down from the hoist, connect the battery's negative cable, turn on the engine and inspect the exhaust pipes.
