2003 Dodge Durango Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace Catalytic Converters on a 4.7L Engine on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: Because the mini catalytic converters on the 4.7L engine are part of the exhaust pipe, the entire exhaust assembly has to be changed during any replacement. After lifting up and supporting the vehicle, drench the bolts and nuts in Mopar Rust Penetrant and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Take out the clamps securing the flange of the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe and to the muffler or extension pipe. Following that, take out the engine rear mount and the crossbar and then, when ready, to take out the catalytic converter, loosen other areas of the exhaust system first. Look for any signs that the converter overheated such as swelling or bending on the stainless steel body, as well as see if any heat shields remain straight and are not moving. If the catalyst looks damaged on the inside, tapping it with a rubber mallet can help find out if the center is also damaged. When putting it in, line up the catalytic converter flange with the exhaust pipe and insert it into the muffler or extension pipe. In case the other parts of the exhaust system have become loose, correct them following the required steps. For each catalytic converter flange connection, put in a clamp with its associated nuts and tighten them to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque. Place in the new crossmember and rear engine mount, lower the automobile and run the engine to look for exhaust leaks and see if there is still contact with the vehicle body panels.
