2004 Dodge Durango Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Brake Light Switch on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: To service the brake light switch, first disconnect the black cable on the battery and wait two minutes before you open anything near the air bag system to ensure it does not deploy by mistake. This switch is designed for only one use, so if you take it out, you have to replace it. The brake lamp switch is next to the support bracket found on the lower steering column. Take the wire harness connector away, then rotate the switch housing part about a third of a full turn to the right until the switch's tabs line up with the key hole in the mounting bracket. Push the switch straight toward you and then take it out and throw it away. To install, brace the brake pedal, set the tabs on the collar into the keyed hole and seat the switch housing against the bracket as you gently push the tabs in. Counterclockwise twist the switch housing about 30 degrees to insert the tabs. Never pull the brake pedal before you're done with the switch plunger adjustment. Pull the brake pedal out without raising it and rotate the plunger lever to the left until it clicks in place and is parallel to the brake light switch. The switch plunger length is set when adjusting and this step cannot be reversed; if you don't do it right, you'll need to replace the switch. After that, connect the wire harness connector back to the brake lamp switch and reattach the negative battery cable.
