2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Disc Brake Caliper on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: You should lift and support the vehicle, take off the wheel and then fix and repair the brake system. Drain a baby bottle's worth of fluid from the reservoir by using a clean way to suck out the brake fluid. Place the caliper piston all the way into the caliper, then remove the banjo bolt from the hose and the gasket washers, throwing away the gasket washers. Following this, take out the slide bolts and remove the caliper from its place on the adapter. Blot out the brake fluid from the caliper, then wedge a C-clamp with a block of wood on top of just one piston and block the other piston with a piece of wood padded with shop towels. Spray quick pulses of low pressure air through the caliper brake hose port to get the first piston out gently, ensuring you don't blow it out by spraying sustained air. Take out the first piston, block up the empty bore with the C-clamp and wood and repeat the same thing on the other piston with the padded wood. Gently use a proper tool to lift the dust boots from the right spot and next get rid of the piston seals to be installed. Push out the boot seals from the caliper by using the caliper mounting bolt bushings, then pull out the caliper bleed screw. You should use clean brake fluid or brake clean to clean the inside of the caliper, avoiding any solvents similar to gasoline that might harm your piston and seal. Look for signs of wear or cracking on the piston, putting in a new one if necessary and choosing one that is the same type. If the bore has minor problems, try using a brake hone to smooth the surface, but if it's much corroded or polishing makes the bore larger by over 0.025 mm, change the caliper. While assembling, clean the installation area, inject brake fluid into the caliper pistons and bores and seals and install the new piston seals inside the caliper bores. Coat the edge of the boot with silicone grease, fit it on the piston and check that it is all the way on. Press the piston into the opening of the caliper and then use the C-4171 tool and the installed to set the dust boot in place. Take care of the second piston and seal next and lubricate the mounting bolt bushings, the inside of the caliper and the seals there with Mopar brake grease or Dow Corning 807 grease. Place the boot seals in the caliper seal bore, line them up in the center and secure the mounting bolt bushings so the seal lip engages. Secure the caliper back to the adapter, checking for and cleaning away any debris from the slide pins which you should also lightly lubricate. Squeeze the caliper slide pin bolts to 72 Nm, then place equal air pressure in both sides of the slide pin boot to see if it hides the slide pin. Attach the brake hose to the caliper after putting on new copper washers and tighten the banjo bolt to 31 Nm. Fill the brake system, set the wheels into place, take off the supports, lower the vehicle and make sure the brake fluid is at the correct level.
