2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Parking Brake Cable on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before working on the rear parking brake cables, take out the rear seat bottom and unplug the final drive control module electrical connections. At this step, remove the bracket mounting bolts and the rear sill plates, before rolling back the carpet to get at the park brake cables in the rear. Pull the lock to prevent using the park brake, unhook the brake cables from the equalizer and take out the park brake cables from the floor. Lift and support the vehicle, take off the tire and wheel and remove the rear caliper and disc brake rotor after that. Unbolt the flange nut surrounding the axle, then remove the axle, cut the park brake cable right at the brake actuator lever and separate the rear shoes. After taking out the park brake cable through the support plate, unscrew the bolts that hold the stabilizer bar bushing and then remove the two park brake cable pins on the axle. The process for installation is to connect the new cable to the vehicle, secure it with the two push pins to the stabilizer bar bracket and finish with the stabilizer bar bushing clamp bolts. Insert the park brake cable into the support plate, link it again to the brake actuator lever and fasten the rear park brake shoes. Place the axle shaft and the axle flange nuts, correct the rear park brake shoes and fix the disc brake rotor and rear caliper next. Put the brake cables under the carpet, set the wheel and tire back into place, set the vehicle back on the ground and attach the cables to the equalizer again. Unfasten the park brake cable, lower the rear carpet sections and add back the rear sill panels. Install the bracket mounting nuts for the drive control module, reconnect all the electrical connectors and confirm parking brake is working after the rear seat bottom is installed.
