2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Booster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Brake Booster on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Start by siphoning the master cylinder, making sure you take out both the main brake line there and the one leading to the HCU (4). Then, remove the secondary brake line near the master cylinder and at the HCU (4), then take out the 4 chassis lines at the HCU and remove its electrical connector (5). Unscrew the 3 nuts from the HCU mount, then remove the whole assembly from beneath the vehicle. Unplug the sensor's electrical connector (8) from the reservoir (2) and unscrew the master cylinder's two mounting nuts (9) to remove the master cylinder (6). Separate the hose from the booster check valve (10), unscrew and lift out the hush panel (2) and remove the steering column opening cover (2) together. Grasp the retainer (1) beside the pedal pin (2) to free the push rod (3), then slide the rod out of its position on the pin. Pull out the brake lamp switch from the connector and remove its wire connector as well. Get rid of the four nuts attaching the booster to the dash and in the engine bay, pull the routing clips off the wire harness and move the harness aside. It's important to take the booster off the vehicle after the trip. Before installation, inspect the check valve's grommet in the booster and change it if needed. Replace the booster's dash seal, attach the booster using the 2 positions in the dash panel and include multi-mileage grease to the pedal pin. After inserting the booster attaching nuts (3) onto the studs, tighten them to a value of 39 Nm or 29 ft. lbs. Set the booster push rod (1) onto the pedal pin and then clip it in place. Put a new brake lamp switch in place, reattach the electrical connector and put on the steering column opening cover (2) and the hush panel (2). Mount the vacuum hose onto the vacuum booster check vale (1) and fix the power brake booster master cylinder (1) with a new gasket and nuts in its place. After rerouting the wire harness, place the routing clip in its spot and link the brake fluid level electrical connector back up. Mount the HCU with the attached bracket onto your vehicle and tighten the two nuts, plug in the electrical connector and install the four chassis lines at the HCU. After finishing the other steps, add the secondary brake line as well as the primary brake line to the HCU (4), then add the secondary and primary brake lines to the master cylinder and only then fill and bleed the brakes.
