2005 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Locate and Replace the Camshaft Position Sensor on a 2.4L 4-Cylinder Engine on 2005 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is placed on the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine's right-front side and can be moved forward or backward. Start by disconnecting the CMP's electrical connector, remove the two bolts holding the sensor and gently slide the sensor to the back of the engine. Before installing anything, take away the plastic timing belt cover by removing three bolts and loosen the connection from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Tune the camshaft until the timing gear is aligned with the target wheel and the sensor's face is placed behind it to avoid damage when the engine is started. Secure the head of the sensor to the top surface of the cylinder head and place two bolts loosely in their holes. Adjust the space from the back of the target wheel to the sensor's face to .030" using an L-shaped spark plug gapping gauge or a brass shim the same size. Gently get the sensor into contact with the gapping gauge, then fasten the two bolts according to the manufacturer's torque requirements. After you have tightened everything, check the air gap and adjust it if needed and then torque all the bolts. Last, screw back on the upper timing belt cover with the bolts and connect the electrical cables to both the ECT and CMP sensors.
