2006 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft Position Sensor on a 2.4L 4-Cylinder Engine on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The upright Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) installed on the right-front side of the cylinder head can be adjusted. First, take off the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts and slide the sensor toward the ending of the engine. Before installing the belt, first take off the plastic upper timing belt cover which is secured by removing three bolts; remember to disconnect the electrical connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor to keep it from being hit. Turn the engine until the camshaft gear and target wheel lie next to each other, so the sensor is placed behind the target wheel to help prevent damage. Secure the sensor to the cylinder head by placing the two mounting bolts and tighten them just enough so they won't fall out. Put a gap of 0.030 inches between the back of the target wheel and the sensor face, either by using a spark plug gapping gauge or some 0.030 inches brass shim stock. Move the sensor forward to where it touches the gapping gauge, then tighten the bolts according to how hard they should be tightened. Check the air gap again after tightening and make adjustments before you do the final bolt tightening. In the end, put in the upper timing belt cover with the three screws and reconnect the wires to both the ECT and CMP sensors.
