2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain Your Driver Air Bag on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Begin the driver air bag service by opening the hood and removing the battery's negative cable. Allow two minutes for the system reserve capacitor to discharge before working with air bag parts. Look for the three access holes that lead to the air bag retaining hooks from the rear of the steering wheel. Pick up a small flat blade screwdriver and, making sure the blade is on the driver air bag loop face, insert the tip into either of the access holes at the top, turn the screwdriver and pull the loop away from the hook while carefully lifting the driver air bag trim cover. Use the same method for the other end top access hole and loop as you did for the first. The bottom loop can be taken off but its primary use is for positioning during assembly, as it's shaped like a cone and should go at the bottom of the steering wheel once everything is reconnected. Release the air bag, remove the two squibs and the speed control connector and then set the driver air bag aside. Replace the Clock Spring too when changing the air bag of a deployed driver's side driver air bag. For setting up the driver's air bag, push it into the steering wheel and securely connect the squib wires. Cable the speed control connector, attach the lower center loop first and fit the upper two loops around the steering wheel hooks. Never reconnect the battery's negative cable until the system test has been done to prevent personal harm or death.
