2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Column Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Steering Column Cover on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Turning off the air bag system is required before servicing the steering column on those vehicles fitted with air bags. To do this, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable for at least two minutes to let the air bag system capacitor discharge. First, slowly push down on the cover above the steering column opening to free the snap retainers from the dashboard. Adjust the cover so it's partially open and gain access to the clips that keep the retainer to the steering column opening reinforcing bracket. After removing the screws, lift out the bracket from under the instrument panel. When installing it, place the steering column opening reinforcement bracket onto the instrument panel and put in all the screws, tightening them to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.). After that, set the base of the steering column opening cover into the reinforcing bracket's clips, then raise the top to line it up with the locking tabs in the instrument panel. Gently connect the negative cable of the battery again.
