2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Service a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step in servicing or repairing the rack and pinion is to center the power steering rack in its movement. Use four gear mounting bolts to join the rack and pinion with the front suspension crossmember and tighten them to 61 Nm. Realign the power steering pinion shaft with the gear housing, then put the cover seal into place over the pinion shaft and secure all the holes with the included tabs. Slide the column end of the lower steering column partway into the gap in the dash and make sure the coupling's flat side lines up with the flat on the pinion shaft. Press the coupling against the notch in the pinion shaft and secure the roll pin until it is fully aligned. Whenever needed, shift the power steering rack so that it is in the correct place. Make sure the crossmember is reaching its connecting position on the body and frame rails with the help of a transmission jack, as you slide the steering column lower coupling through the hole in the dash panel. Stick the two bolts for each crossmember arm through the lower control arm rear bushings into their tapping plates and tighten the front and rear mounting bolts that attach the crossmember to the frame rails to about 2 Nm. The crossmember should be attached in the same location it was removed from to keep wheel alignment. Gently tap the crossmember with a face hammer until it matches the marks, then tighten the two main crossmember bolts under the lower control arm bushings to 250 Nm and the rest to 153 Nm. Fit and secure the engine torque strut to its crossmember position with alignment and proper clamping. Fit the drive-belt splash shield, then tighten all the fixings that fasten it to other vehicle body parts, finishing with the attachment to the front suspension crossmember. If you've removed them already, put back the fasteners joining the front fascia to the lower reinforcement and the fastener connecting the wheel house splash shield to the drive belt splash shield. Mount the washer on the outer end of the stud that extends from the torque strut bolt on the crossmember. Put the pencil strut over the right front area of the crossmember and body and use your torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 52 Nm. Steady torque the O-ring on the pressure hose that goes into the gear housing and cleaning end and gear ports of the O-ring together. For such vehicles, attach the cooler first, then link the tube to the routing clip and finish by mounting screws on the front suspension crossmember, tightening all of them to 10 Nm. For cars without turbo engines, slide the cooler hose onto the correct slot on the gear housing and secure it with a clamp after the hose crosses the fat end of the metal fitting. After installing the power steering fluid pressure hose, check that it runs correctly between the crossmember and the driveshaft, creating a clearance of 4-10 mm when tightened. Insert the pressure tube into its port on the rack and pinion and use a wrench to tighten the pressure hose tube's nut to 31 Nm. For turbo cars, first slide the return hose onto the gear outlet port. Afterward, put the pressure hose into its socket and thread the tube nut onto the gear without tightening yet. Place the routing clip on the fluid pressure hose and afterward tighten the tube nut to 31 Nm. When the vehicle has a power steering fluid pressure switch, fasten the wiring harness connector to it and make sure the locking tab is securely snapped in place. Apply the tie rod heat shield to the knuckle arm with its hole matching the tie rod hole and add the outer tie rod ball stud followed by tightening the nut to 55 Nm. Place the tire and wheel assembly onto the mount, secure them with 135 Nm torque from each wheel mounting nut and then lower the car. Put the dash-to-lower seal onto the lower coupling's collar after adding grease to its lip. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead and if they aren't, rotate the steering column shaft until the two connections are lined up. Slide the upper coupling over the lower coupling, attach the pinch bolt, tighten the nut to 28 Nm and install the clip that holds the pinch bolt in place. Get rid of the steering wheel holder and ensure there is no noise from the lower coupling rubbing against the dash-to-coupling seal as you move the steering wheel. You should perform the first operation on the power steering pump to fill and bleed the power steering system, make sure there are no leaks and adjust the front wheel toe setting.
