2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before checking or repairing the power steering pump, stop the engine and look at the fluid level to protect yourself from moving parts. It is essential for your power steering pump to have either Mopar(R) Power Steering Fluid +4 or Mopar(R) ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid, as using any other will harm the pump; ensure you do not overfill. Place the power steering fluid into the reservoir up to the marked line and leave it alone for at least two minutes. Lift the car by its front wheels and slowly move the steering wheel back and forth from lock to lock 20 times with the engine turned off, checking the fluid every time; if your car has a long return line or oil cooler, complete the operation by turning the wheel another 20 times clockwise and another 20 times counterclockwise. First, start the engine and then check to make sure the fluid level stays at correct point when the engine is idling. Let the front wheels rest on the ground, leave the engine idling for two minutes and check that the power steering works and remains very quiet by turning the steering wheel in each direction. If your car's coolant looks very foamy or milky, let it rest for a few minutes and run the engine again, since pump damage could result if you keep running it with foamy coolant. After driving, shut down the engine and inspect the refrigerant level if it's low.
