2006 Dodge Dakota Brake Drum Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Brake Drum Machining on a Lathe Prevent Taper and Surface Variation on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: Brake drums can be machined against a drum lathe when necessary and it's important that initial depths are kept under 0.20 mm (0.008 inch) or so to avoid taper. The best surface finish is achieved by cutting the final layer to 0.025-0.038 mm (0.001-0.0015 inch). Make sure the drum is securely fastened to the lathe and always apply a damper strap near the drum to decrease vibration and prevent chatter. The diameter of the drum's braking area that fits into the hub is cast or stamped onto the drum itself; replace the drum if machining will send its actual diameter over the limit.
