2006 Dodge Dakota Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before you start repairing or servicing the brake caliper, you should lift the vehicle, take off the wheel and tire assembly. Pull in the disc brake caliper to compress it, remove the banjo bolt, then throw away the copper washers, then remove the caliper slide pin bolts and finally extract the caliper from the caliper adapter. Take out the slide pins from the adapter. Release the brake fluid and put a C-clamp over one piston, ensuring there's a piece of wood underneath for protection as you complete the other piston removal. Use little, gentle pulses of air through the hose hole to the piston to loosen the first piston and keep the air pressure temporary to make sure the piston is not damaged. After pulling out the first piston, stop up the empty bore with the C-clamp and a piece of wood and then repeat for the second piston. Grab the piston dust boots with your hand and be gentle with the bore, using a pick tool to remove the lip seal and the piston seals. Make sure the pistons are not cracked or scored and if you find damage, replace them with identical pistons. If there are only light problems in the bore, use a brake hone to smooth them out, but change the caliper if the bore is severely broken up or if polishing expands the bore diameter further than 0.025 mm. Before placing the calipers together, wipe everything down, lubricate the pistons and seals with clean brake fluid and put new seals into the caliper bores. Slip the boot over the piston so the lip is at the end furthest from the piston, then push the lip into the caliper guide with tool C3716-A and handle C-4171. Make sure the bellows inside the dust protection system are not airtight. When putting everything together, skip grease made from petroleum on rubber parts, clean the bores of slide pins and choose the grease included with the kit or Dow Corning-807. Put a layer of mold coating on each slide pin, add the boot to each slide pin and install all the wires to the adapter. Add a new copper washer to the banjo bolt, set the disc brake caliper onto the brake caliper adapter and tighten the banjo bolt back in using new copper washers and 28 Nm. Set the slide pin bolts into the calipers and tighten to 32 Nm, bleed the base brake system, fit the tire and wheel on the vehicle and lower it.
