2006 Jeep Commander Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Parking Brake Shoes on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before servicing the parking brake shoes, lift the car, remove the rear tire and then take off the wheel. After that, remove the 2 caliper bolts and take the caliper off, being sure it stays supported instead of hanging from the brake hose. Take the rubber access plug out from the back of the rear disc brake support plate. When required, use a brake adjuster tool to position at the top of the wheel and turn it to retract any parking brake shoes. First, get rid of the rotor from the axle hub flange, continue by taking off the axle flange nuts and then remove the rear differential's axle shaft. Pull out the shoe to shoe return spring with needle nose pliers and afterwards, remove the adjuster. Start with the return spring with the brake on, then take out each shoe hold-down clip and pin. While removing them, be sure to push together the clip ends to get rid of the pins. Open the Quick Release and pull the shoes out from the actuator lever. Take a water-drenched cloth or try brake cleaner to clean the brake parts, ensuring not to use any other cleaning sprays and then rub away light rust and scale on your brake shoes using sandpaper. Inspection should cover the brake shoes' rivets, looking for any areas within 0.78 mm of the heads and making sure bonded lining measures at least 1.6 mm. The contact pattern on the lining should be examined for indication of bending or tapering and finally the adjuster screw assembly should be checked for blemishes or rust. If brake springs or retainers appear worn, replace them with new ones and if the brake shoe contact pads show signs of wear or rust, change the support plate. Put the park brake shoes onto the actuator lever, hold them there with the clips and pins and confirm they are engaging with the lever. Thread in the return spring, move the adjuster screw to one side and place the notched end of the adjuster about the shoes. Additionally, check that you have aligned the star wheel with the main access hole. Attach the shoe to the shoe adjuster spring with needle nose pliers and then put the axle shaft into the rear differential, tightening the axle flange nuts. After securing the rotor onto the hub, add the caliper with the 2 bolts to 44 Nm, set the parking brake shoes, reattach the wheel with tire, lower the vehicle and make sure the brake works properly.
