2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair Parking Brake Shoes on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Insert the parking brake shoes are being worked on, you should start by elevating the vehicle, disassembling the wheel from the axle and removing the tire. With that, loosen the 2 caliper bolts and gently detach the caliper, so it won't hang through the brake hose. Remove the rubber seal from the rear of the rear disc brake support plate. Should the brake shoes need to be released, hold the brake adjuster tool at the top of the star wheel and crank it to free the shoes. Begin by unscrewing the four nuts from the axle flange, then separate the rotor from the axle hub and complete the job by pulling the rear differential axle shaft out. First, remove the shoe to shoe return spring with needle nose pliers, then take out the adjuster. Grab the return spring shoe, then remove the brake pliers, the clips and the pins, always making sure the clip ends are closed together for the pin to move out. Remove the shoes from their place on the actuator lever. Only clean the brakes with water or specially recommended brake cleaners, not other products and touch up shallow wear or rust on the brake shoes with fine sandpaper. Install a new pair of riveted brake shoes once they have 0.78 mm left to the rivet head and replace a bonded lining when it is 1.6 mm thick. Look for any bending or stretching in the lining and inspect both the adjuster screw and the assembly for major rust or damage. Throw away any brake springs that look worn or distorted and any bendy retainer bars and add a new support plate if the brake shoe contact pads have poor condition or appear rusted. During installation, fit the park brake shoes to the actuator lever, then hold them in place by putting in hold down clips or pins on the support plate. Clip in the return spring, grease the adjuster screw and align its pointed ends with the shoes, so the star wheel fits into the access opening. Join the shoe to the shoe adjuster spring with needle nose pliers and then install and fasten the axle shaft onto the rear differential. Start by reattaching the rotor to the axle hub, then the caliper and finally the 2 mounting bolts to 44 Nm. Replace the parking brake shoes, put back the wheel and tire, set the vehicle down and make sure your parking brake works properly.
