2006 Jeep Liberty Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first step in repair or servicing your 2WD rack and pinion is to remove the power steering fluid from the reservoir. Lock the wheel so the Clock Spring doesn't move and then elevate and hold the car so the front wheels can be reached. Take off the skid plate under the front end to reach the rack and pinion and the tire and wheel assembly should come next, with the alignment adjusting cams and tie rod ends marks noted. Take out the tie rod end nuts then use Puller C-3894-A to separate the ends from the knuckles. Then, take out the pinch bolt holding the lower intermediate shaft coupler and slide the coupler away from the rack and pinion. Unplug both ends of the power steering lines from the rack and pinion and get rid of the bolts holding the rack and pinion to the front cradle, followed by pulling the rack and pinion out of the vehicle. If the outer tie rod ends need to be changed, transfer them before putting the rack and pinion back into your vehicle. Install the mounting bolts to secure your rack and pinion, followed by tightening them to 162 Nm (120 ft. lbs.) and attach the power steering lines with tube nuts, tightening them to 37 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Refer to Step 9 of the video to reinstall the lower coupler pinch bolt, then move the coupler onto the rack and pinion and connect the tie rod end to the knuckle with the tightened nuts. Set the assembly back into place, add the skid plate, lift the vehicle and turn back the steering wheel. Then, finish by adding power steering fluid and adjust the toe after your steering wheel is centered.
