  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair Shock Absorbers on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: Start with the left side by cutting off the power, then take out the battery, power center and battery tray. Take out the battery temperature sensor, then remove the four upper shock mounting nuts. Raise and hold up the car, remove the left wheel and tire assembly and pull out the bolt at the lower control arm joining to the clevis bracket. Taking out the stabilizer link and the lower ball joint nut is necessary, then split the lower ball joint from the lower control arm using tool C-4150A. Turn the lower control arm downward so you can remove the bracket at the shock and take the entire shock assembly. When required, take the spring out of the shock. Remove the air box and undo the two cruise control servo nuts on the right for the right side. After that, remove the upper mounting nuts for the shock. Raise the vehicle, remove the right side tire and remove the bolt at the lower end of the control arm attached to the clevis bracket. Remove the lower control arm by first putting the car on the understanding lift and taking off the link, the lower ball joint nut and finally separating the joint from the arm with remover C-4150A. Lower the lower control arm, remove the clevis attachment at the shock and extract the shock from the vehicle. It's sometimes needed to take out the spring to work on the shock. For installation on the left, attach the spring to the shock if it has been removed, attach the shock assembly and the four nuts above and tighten them to 108 Nm. Attach the clevis bracket to the shock using a bolt tightened to 61 Nm, replace the lower control arm and tighten the lower ball joint nut at 81 Nm. Put the clevis bracket on the lower control arm and tighten its bolt to 150 Nm and next, attach the lower stabilizer link to the lower control arm and tighten its bolt to 136 Nm. After installing the left tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, add back the battery temperature sensor, insert the battery in its tray, install the battery and restore the battery cables. To fit the shock on the right side, first put it back, then attach the shock assembly and the nuts to hold the shock in place and tighten them all to 108 Nm. Secure the clevis bracket at the shock, applying 61 Nm using a torque wrench and after that, mount the lower control with the lower ball joint nut by tightening it to 81 Nm. First, attach the clevis bracket to the lower control arm and tighten the bolt to 150 Nm, then place the lower stabilizer link at the made end of the lower control arm and tighten that bolt to 136 Nm. Next, place the tires and wheels on your vehicle, lower it down, bolt on the cruise control servo brackets and lastly, put in the airbox.
