2006 Jeep Wrangler A/C Condenser Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an A/C Condenser on 2006 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Prior to extracting the A/C condenser, first isolate the negative battery cable, collect the refrigerant and remove only part of the engine coolant. The next step is to remove the cooling recovery container, take off the upper radiator hose from the radiator and put it where it won't get in the way. Get rid of the radiator cooling fan and fan shroud, then raise and support the vehicle. Retract the lower condenser/radiator air seal out of the way and take out the two screws securing the lower condenser bracket to the bottom of the grille panel before bringing the vehicle down. If you have the tools, take out the air seal on the upper condenser/radiator, then unfasten the connecting nuts on the discharge and liquid lines leading to the condenser tapping and separate those lines, throwing away the O-ring seals. Put plugs or tape over the open refrigerant line fittings and condenser ports and then remove the bolts securing both the top condenser brackets and the side radiator brackets at each side to the grille panel. Raise the radiator to the back against the engine, being careful not to damage any parts and then move the A/C condenser out of the engine compartment. When replacing the A/C condenser, add 7% refrigerant oil by weight, using the recommended form for the compressor, to the refrigerant system. Insert the A/C condenser into the engine area and fasten the two bolts at the top of the condenser brackets to the grille panel, turning the bolts to 5 N.m (44 in. lbs.). Mount the brackets for the radiator to the grille panel and clamp the radiator using the six securing bolts, screwing them in to an indicated tightness of 8 N.m (72 in. lbs.). Lift and hold the vehicle back up, move the lower condenser/radiator air seal away from the area and install the two bolts on the lower condenser bracket to the bottom of the grille panel. Tighten the bolts to 5 N.m (44 in. lbs.) and then lower the vehicle. Unscrew or pull loose the tape or plugs from the discharge and liquid line fittings as well as the condenser ports, then add a light layer of clean refrigerant oil to the new seals, place the O-rings on the lines and use the R-134a-approved O-rings for the rest of the job. Join the discharge and liquid lines to the condenser tapping block and tighten the nuts to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.); then, if you have the upper seal, follow the instructions to fit it in place. Put back the radiator cooling fan, fit the fan shroud onto it, attach the top radiator hose to the radiator and connect it with a hose clamp. Fit the coolant recovery container, reattach the connection to the negative battery, load the cooling water into the engine, remove all the refrigerant and supply fresh refrigerant.
