2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Rack and Pinion on the Front Suspension Crossmember on 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Secure the rack and pinion onto the front suspension with four bolts at 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) tightness. Guide the power steering rack to its center, then connect the pinion shaft dash cover seal over the pinion shaft and line up the holes on the gear housing with the tabs. Place the bottom of the lower steel steering column partway through the dash and line up the coupling and pinion shaft flats. Then fit the coupling over the shaft. Place the roll pin in the coupling and through the notch in the pinion shaft to make sure it is in the middle. Replace the power steering rack when necessary. Using the jack and transmission, hoist the front suspension crossmember and power steering rack until they hit their mounting points and bring the steering column's lower coupling down through the dash panel. Feed the bolts for the crossmember into the bushings in the lower control arm and up into the holes in the tapping plates, orient them so they're crossed and tighten all six to about 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Check that the crossmember is fastened to the same body place you removed it from to not disturb wheel alignment. Match up the crossmember with the marks and use the soft face hammer, then tighten both crossmember mount bolts to 185 lb. ft. and the other four bolts to 113 lb. ft. Secure the engine torque strut to the crossmember, arrange the drive-belt splash shield and mount the fasteners securing it to the body and front suspension member. If you removed these fasteners earlier, arrange them again to secure the front fascia to the body reinforcement as well as the wheel house splash shield to the splash cover under the drive belt. Place the washer on the stud of the torque strut bolt at the crossmember, line up the pencil strut on the right front body and crossmember and tighten the mounting nuts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.). Wipe the clean the ends of the open power steering hose and the ports on the power steering rack with a rag, insert a newly lubricated O-ring inside before using the reassembled power steering pressure hose. For cars with crossmember mounted power steering fluid coolers, connect the cooler, attach the cooler tube to the correct routing bracket and screw the cooler to the crossmember. Tighten all these screws to 10 Nm. Non-turbo engine vehicles call for sliding the cooler hose onto the rack outlet port fitting and clamping the hose past the bead on the steel end. Route the power steering fluid pressure hose toward the suspension crossmember so there is a gap of 4-10 mm when fully tightened. Route the pressure hose from the power steering rack into its port and tighten the nut on the other end to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs). With turbo engine vehicles, place the return hose into the rack outlet, attach the pressure hose to its port and screw the pressure hose tube nut into the outlet only hand tight. Place the routing clip on the fluid pressure hose tube and tighten the pressure hose tube nut until you reach 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Connect the wiring harness connector to the switch, securing the locking tab so it isn't loose. Put the tie rod heat shield on either side and when you have the shield hole lined up with the tie rod end mounting hole, fasten the outer tie rod ball stud into the knuckle arm. Tighten the mounting nut to 55 Nm or 40 ft. lbs. Fit the tire and wheel assembly on each side, secure the wheel mounting nuts to a torque of 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) and let down the vehicle. Line up the lower coupling plastic collar with the lip of the dash-to-lower coupling seal and smear grease around the seal's edge. Ensure both front wheels are pointed straight ahead and switch the steering column shaft until you see the upper coupling line up with the lower coupling. Put the upper coupling over the lower coupling, tighten the nut to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.), insert the pinch bolt and add the clip. Remove the steering wheel holder and check that the lower coupling doesn't rub on the dash-to-coupling seal as the steering wheel is turned. Fill the power steering with fluid, look for leaks around the equipment and adjust the way the front wheels point.
