2007 Jeep Wrangler Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A

  • Q: When Should Parking Brake Shoes Be Replaced and What Inspections Are Necessary on 2007 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Replace riveted shoes when they are down to 0.78 mm (1/32 in.) from the rivet heads and discard bonded shoes when the lining is only 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) thick. Examine how the rubber contacts the tread and drum, since a bent shoe or tapered drum may mean both have to be changed and a lining with contact only on the side may mean only the shoes have to be taken out. Look at the adjustment screw assembly (8) and replace it if the star wheel or threads are broken or if rust or corrosion is very severe. If any part of the brake springs (5 & 7) or retainer components (6) is observed to be worn, twisted or collapsed or if brake drag is detected, replacing them is necessary, as overheating can weaken them. Check the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate (1) and if any are worn or rusted through or the plate is bent, replace the plate.
