Q: How to Remove the Rack and Pinion from a Left-Hand Drive on 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Turn the steering wheel in the center position and lock it there with a wheel holder to stabilize the Clock Spring. To start, at the steering column base, yank out the coupling retainer clip (4), release the lock nut, withdraw the pinch bolt (1) and separate parts (2) and (3) of the steering column couple. First, jack up the car, then take off the mounting nuts (3) and remove both front tire-and-wheel assemblies (1). From each outer side of the vehicle, loosen the nut (2) attaching the outer tie rod (1) to the knuckle (3) with a wrench that is holding the stud of the tie rod end. Slide the Remover (3), Special Tool MB991113, beneath the tie rod end (1) at the knuckle (2) and loosen it so that the tie rod (1) and heat shield (4) can then be removed from the knuckle (3). If you have a power steering fluid pressure switch installed (3), pull up on the locking tab and take out the wiring harness connector (1). Back out the tube nut and release the power steering fluid pressure hose (4) at the rack and pinion. After that, remove the hose clamp and the hose (2) going from the rack and pinion to the outlet port fitting on the cooler. To service the turbo engine, unscrew screw (3) holding the pressure hose onto the rack and pinion, open clip (2) and slide the pressure hose out, then undo return hose clamp (4) and remove the return hose from the outlet port on the rack and pinion. In case the vehicle has crossmember-mounted power steering coolers, detach the tube from the clip on the rack and pinion and then take out the two screws securing the cooler to the crossmember so it can hang free beneath the vehicle. Unfasten the mounting nuts (1, 3), the pencil strut (2) and the strut washer (4) from the right front corner of the crossmember and body, along with the washer (4) behind the torque strut (5) bolt. Remove the fastener holding the wheel house splash shield to the drive belt splash shield and if required, further remove those securing the front fascia to gain access to the front fastener. Remove the fastener (5) holding the drive belt splash shield (3) to the front suspension crossmember (6), plus the fasteners (4) securing the splash shield (3) to the body (2), then remove the splash shield (3). Save the bolt, unmount the engine torque strut from the crossmember and make a mark on the vehicle to show where the front suspension crossmember was before. Join the transmission jack to the front suspension crossmember before backing out all six bolts joining it to the frame. Be sure that the two bolts between the lower control arm and rear isolator bushings do not need to be removed fully. Bring the front suspension crossmember (3) down just until you can get to the steering column lower coupling (1), making sure the transmission jack is holding it in place, not allowing it to hang down on the lower control arms. With a roll pin punch (4), remove the roll pin (3) connecting the steering column coupling (1) to the rack and pinion pinion shaft (2) and then press the steering column lower coupling away from the pinion shaft. Take off the pinion shaft dash cover seal (1) from the tabs (3) of the rack and pinion housing (4) and remove it and then remove the four bolts holding the rack and pinion (3) to the front suspension crossmember (4).
