Q: How to Remove the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Dodge Viper?
A: Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and cover it with something isolating before anything else. Keep the steering wheel straight ahead with the help of a wheel holder. After that, take out the air cleaner housing and suck out the power steering fluid from its reservoir. Take out the pressure hose (1) and the return hose (2) from the rack and pinion (3). Slip off the coupling pinch bolt that holds the intermediate shaft (2) to the rack and pinion shaft (3) and if you need to, use a brass drift and hammer to help slide the intermediate shaft off the rack and pinion shaft. You should keep the toe pattern shims (3) with you when removing the rack and pinion (4) so they can be properly reinstalled when putting everything back in place; use the same number of shims to restore the steering system's proper toe pattern. Take out the two bolts (1) that hold the rack and pinion in place and make certain you do not misplace the shims. Lift the vehicle and then remove the front tires and wheel assemblies from the wheels. At the outer tie rod end on both sides, take out the nut (3) and then release the tie rod end from the knuckle using Puller, Special Tool C-4150A. Pull the rack and pinion out through the opening to the left front wheel, just ahead of the steering knuckle.
