  You should remove the cylinder head covers before you begin work on the rocker arm assembly. Find the rocker arm assembly as well as the rocker arms before taking it apart. Unscrew the bolts that hold the rocker arm assembly, then remove the assembly without turning it upside down and resting it on the lash adjusters. After removing the rocker arm and shafts, remove the dowel pin with a 4 mm screw, nut, spacer and washer, being sure to avoid reusing the same pin. Inspect the shafts for any damage or wear at their rocker arm mounts and clean any clogged oil holes in the shafts. Intake and exhaust rocker arms look different and you need to tell them apart before beginning the procedure. Inspect the rocker arms for any wear or damage such as scuffing on the rollers, bore, broken or missing swivel pads, cracks or fatigue and protruding roller axles. If there are any problems, change the rocker arm assembly. Never take the lash adjuster out of the rocker arm assembly to keep it safe. When assembling, fit new dowel pins, rocker arms and pedestals onto the shaft so that each dowel is pushed all the way down against its rocker shaft. It is possible to put the rocker arm and shaft assembly in place at the same time as cylinder head installation, but putting it after is preferable. First, turn the cams to the neutral position so the valve spring load is lower. Next, place the rocker arm and its shaft after checking their marks. Reinstall the cylinder head covers after tightening the assembly bolts in order to 31 Nm (275 in. lbs.).

  The shafts for the rocker arms are hollow and contain oil and only the right side assembly has an oil passage leading from the cylinder head to the third rocker shaft support, while the left side has an oil path from the cylinder head to the second rocker shaft support. First, remove the cylinder head covers and locate the rocker arm assembly and its rocker arms. Next, unbolt the rocker arm assembly and take it apart, making sure not to overturn it so air doesn't enter the lash adjusters and checking that it doesn't put pressure on the lash adjusters when you change its position. Use only a 4 mm screw, nut, spacer and washer while taking out the dowel pin during disassembly, so they don't get used again and remove the rocker arms and pedestals as they come out. Inspect the shafts' mounting parts on the rocker arms and if they are damaged, install replacement mounting kits and clean any obstructions in the oil holes. Assembly begins by setting up new dowel pins and inserting both rocker arms and pedestals onto the shaft, so that both upper rows of notches are visible, with the right set being placed toward the engine's back and the left at its front. Install the dowel pins and press them into the rocker shaft in the pedestal so they won't come loose and carefully check all lash adjusters to ensure the caps are in place. While the rocker arm and shaft assembly is installable before or after putting in the cylinder head, it is considered best to wait until after. Slide the Camshafts to neutral and reduce spring loading, then assemble the rocker arm and shaft so that their ID marks are facing in the opposite direction for each head. To finish, tighten all the rocker arm/shaft assembly bolts in the pattern shown in the instructions, each to 31 Nm (275 in. lbs.).
