Chrysler Town & Country Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Tie Rod End on Chrysler Town & Country?
    A:
Open the inner tie rod and place the travel restrictor so the flat side of its teeth is pointing out from the inboard side of the inner tie rod ball joint. Apply some Mopar(R) Lock & Seal Adhesive or an equivalent medium thread locker adhesive to the central threaded section on the inner tie rod stud. Make sure to use the right size wrench on the exposed rack gear to stop it from rotating while installing. Place the inner tie rod onto the gear using the correct tie rod installement tool or crows foot wrench, hold the rack gear stable while doing so and tighten the rod 78 Nm (58 ft. lbs.). Spread a little Mopar(R) Lubriplate or an alternative lubricant around the groove on the inner tie rod shaft for the bellows to be mounted without twisting the bellows when adjusting toe. Slide a transfer tube clamp on the transfer tube past where the bellows will be attached and lightly attach another new clamp to the large end of the bellows. With the long end of the bellows towards the front of the slide, lay it so the clamp can slide over the inner tie rod and under the gear body, then push the small part past the groove in the rod until the ridge matches the groove. Place a clamp on the top of the bellows as you insert them into the transfer tube, then crimp the bellows clamp on the gear body using crimping pliers. Secure the clamp to the small tube of the bellows and place the leak detection pump just to the left. After that, put in the mounting screws. Insert the jam nut on the inner tie rod so you can install the outer tie rod. On the aforementioned outer tie rod, tighten the jam nut only after installing the inner tie rod without tightening it too much. Install the outside tie rod on the inside tie rod by counting the same number of turns as during removal. Loosely place the outer tie rod end into the Steering Knuckle and snug it fit by turning the steering knuckle nut with a crowfoot wrench and socket until it reaches 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Fit the tie rod jam nut tightly, but don't overtighten it; final tightening comes later, after setting the toe. Afterwards, install the front wheel and tire assembly, lower the car, adjust the front toe and fix the tie rod jam nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
