Dodge Challenger Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove the Timing Cover from an Engine on Dodge Challenger?
    A:
To uncover the engine timing cover, take the engine covers off and separate the negative cable from the battery. Then, remove the clean air hose from the Throttle Body and after that, take out the retaining bolt and air cleaner housing. Let the system drain of coolant and remove the belt that drives the accessories. When those are out, remove the fan and fan shroud without touching or disconnecting the A/C hoses or freon. Put the A/C compressor aside, unmount the generator, separate the upper radiator hose and remove the portion of the heater hose connected to the timing cover. Take off the lower radiator hose connected to the engine and unbolt the accessory drive Belt Tensioner and two idler pulleys. First, take off the crankshaft damper and, as you do, don't remove the hoses from the Power Steering Pump. Then, set the pump aside. Remove the bolt of the dipstick support, exit the oil from the engine and remove both the Oil Pan and the pick up tube. The Water Pump can stay in place when timing cover removal is being done. After that, unbolt the timing cover, remove it and check that the timing cover slide bushings are present in the cover.
  • Q: How to Install the Timing Cover and Its Related Components on Dodge Challenger?
    A:
At first, technically, you put on the lower timing belt front cover and then go on to install the upper front timing belt cover. Secure each of the timing cover bolts to their correct tension: M6 bolts to 12 Nm, M8 bolts to 28 Nm and M10 bolts to 54 Nm. Connect the 9 inch Forcing Screw C-4685-C1 with Nut and Thrust Bearing from Crank Sprocket Installer 6792-1 to the crankshaft damper and fasten the damper bolt to 95 Nm with the Damper Holding Fixture 9365. Guide the pump correctly onto the engine bracket and attach three bolts tightening them to 28 Nm. Attach the tensioner first, tighten the bolt at 34 Nm, then fit the idler pulley and tighten the bolt to 28 Nema. Fit the accessory Drive Belt after that, then the radiator Cooling Fan Assembly and secure it with mounting bolts that are tightened to 6 Nm. After connecting the cooling fan power cord, put on the upper hose connecting the radiator and install the air cleaner body. Next, link the negative battery connector and make sure the nut is tightened at 5 Nm, top up the cooling fluid and run the engine until it is at normal temperature to see if enough cooling fluid remains.
