Dodge Nitro Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install a Timing Cover on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Prior to fitting the timing cover, rub the surface of the timing chain cover and block with alcohol and avoid using oil or abrasive tools. Instead of the factory anaerobic sealer, install a Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV where the original gasket was found with this engine. Inspect all water passage o-rings and change them when you see signs of damage. Apply Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV sealer to the front cover in a 3 to 4mm thick bead and install it firmly, using a wrench to tighten the flange head fasteners as shown in the sequence to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). After that, attach the crankshaft damper, A/C Compressor, generator and accessory drive Belt Tensioner assembly. Installed the upper and lower radiator hoses, both heater hoses and the shroud with the viscous fan drive right after. After that, fill the system with coolant and hook up the battery negative cable.
  • Q: How to Remove a Timing Cover on Dodge Nitro?
    A:
Before you get rid of the timing cover, make sure you first disconnect the battery negative cable and drain your cooling system. Then, remove the electric cooling fan and the fan shroud assembly and then remove the fan and its drive assembly. Loosen both heater hoses from the timing cover and also detach the lower radiator hose by the engine's side. Take the accessory drive Belt Tensioner assembly (1) off and follow by removing the crankshaft damper. Take out the generator as well as the A/C Compressor. Anerobic sealers are used on the front cover instead of gaskets in the 3.7L engine, so always use Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV sealant for service. You won't have to remove the Water Pump to replace the timing cover. Then, take out the bolts mending the timing cover to the engine block and drop the timing cover off.
