The camshaft in Dodge Ram 2500 vehicles assist in controlling the intake and exhaust valves thus enabling the air/fuel mixture to enter the engine and facilitate expulsion of exhaust gases. Traditionally made of iron or steel, camshaft functions through mechanisms such as lifters, pushrods and rocker arms in Over Head Valve (OHV) engines, through followers in Single Over Head Cam (SOHC) and Double Over Head Cam (DOHC) mechanisms. Dodge Ram 2500 vehicles might have various cams where performance cams are intended for greater power and are characterized by a higher lift as well as longer duration in order to increase the airflow. Parameters including LSA determines torque and idle characteristics and enables adjustment to particular alterations to the vehicle. In general, the camshaft plays an important role in enhancing the capabilities of the Dodge Ram 2500 engines in various applications.

Dodge Ram 2500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
The camshaft should be serviced and repaired after the engine is removed from the vehicle and taken apart. Remove the rear cam bearing core plug, then fit correct-sized adapters and washers from the Camshaft Bearing Remover/Installer Tool C-3132-A at the back of each bearing shell to drive them out. Removing the camshaft and the components it depends on-the oil pump and drive gear-means you have to take off the Radiator, A/C Condenser if there is one, the engine cover, Intake Manifold, cylinder head covers, Timing Chain, Rocker Arms, push rods and tappets. After that, take out the distributor and pull out the oil pump and distributor drive shaft, before removing the camshaft thrust plate and noting the oil tab location. Ease the camshaft removal by putting a long bolt at its front, making sure you don't harm the cam bearings with the cam lobes. To install new camshaft bearings, use the Camshaft Bearing Remover/Installer Tool C-3132-A to fit the bearing shell onto the proper adapter, place the rear bearing in the device and then install the horseshoe lock gently as you drive in the bearing shell. Set up the remaining bearings so they are lined up correctly with the main bearing's oil holes and install a fresh core hole plug at the back of the camshaft, ensuring oil does not leak. Coat the lobes and bearing surfaces with oil and place the camshaft into the cylinder block within 51 mm (2 inches). Hold the Camshaft Holder Tool C-3509 against the back of the distributor drive gear and secure it with a distributor lock plate bolt so the camshaft cannot come in too far. Apply 24 Nm (210 in. lbs.) torque to the bolts after putting in the camshaft thrust plate and chain oil tab, so their top surface is level with the thrust plate for maximum oil coverage. Place the timing chain and gears in their spots, measure the end play of the camshaft and if it's not correct, put in a new thrust plate. Replace every tappet on the valve and put them in the same place they were before as original. Place the distributor and distributor drive shaft, add the push rods, tappets, rocker arms, timing case cover, cylinder head covers, intake manifold, engine cover, A/C condenser if installed and finish with the radiator. Check for leaks after starting the engine up.
  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft and Its Core Hole Plug in an Engine on Dodge Ram 2500?
    A:
Be sure not to harm either the trailing edge of the camshaft or the sealing surface of the coil plug when taking out the core hole plug for the camshaft. Before you remove the camshaft, cut the negative Battery Cable, remove the air cleaner, drain the coolant and take away the accessory Drive Belt. Put your hoses aside, uninstall the AC compressor and get rid of the Radiator. Remove the Intake Manifold, covers on each cylinder head, right and left cylinder heads, the Oil Pan, cover for the timing case, the oil pick up tube and the oil pump. Take out the Timing Chain and camshaft tensioner/thrust plate assembly and make sure to recognize the lifters for when you put it back in place. Remove the tappets and retainer assembly from the cams, then put in a long bolt at the front of the camshaft. Do this carefully so that the camshaft prevents damage to the bearings and the cam lobes don't accidentally rub against them. Push bikes are not designed for you to service cam bearings. With the core hole in the block clean, use a suitable flat-faced tool to set a new core hole plug in the rear of the camshaft so it is completely on the cylinder block shoulder. Before installing the camshaft, apply light oil to its lobes and the journals in the bearing. Bolt the camshaft tensioner plate assembly into place and tighten each bolt to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) torque, before you put in the timing chain and sprockets. Test for end play on the camshaft and if it's not within the allowable range, install a new thrust plate. Insert the oil pump and oil pick up tube and be sure to return each reused tappet into its first spot; if you have swapped the camshaft, each tappet needs replacing. For engines with MDS, both standard and deactivating roller tappets should be used in cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7, located by the two holes on the side of each tappet. After that, add the tappets and retaining yoke assembly and then bolt on the left and right cylinder heads, the pushrods and Rocker Arms. Place back the timing case cover, oil pan, the covers over the cylinder heads, intake manifold, A/C Compressor, generator, accessory drive belt, radiator, assembly for the air cleaner and at last reattach the negative cable from the battery. When both are full, start the engine and see if any leaks are visible.
