Be sure not to harm either the trailing edge of the camshaft or the sealing surface of the coil plug when taking out the core hole plug for the camshaft. Before you remove the camshaft, cut the negative
Battery Cable, remove the air cleaner, drain the coolant and take away the accessory
Drive Belt. Put your hoses aside, uninstall the AC compressor and get rid of the
Radiator. Remove the
Intake Manifold, covers on each cylinder head, right and left cylinder heads, the
Oil Pan, cover for the timing case, the oil pick up tube and the oil pump. Take out the
Timing Chain and camshaft tensioner/thrust plate assembly and make sure to recognize the lifters for when you put it back in place. Remove the tappets and retainer assembly from the cams, then put in a long bolt at the front of the camshaft. Do this carefully so that the camshaft prevents damage to the bearings and the cam lobes don't accidentally rub against them. Push bikes are not designed for you to service cam bearings. With the core hole in the block clean, use a suitable flat-faced tool to set a new core hole plug in the rear of the camshaft so it is completely on the cylinder block shoulder. Before installing the camshaft, apply light oil to its lobes and the journals in the bearing. Bolt the camshaft tensioner plate assembly into place and tighten each bolt to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) torque, before you put in the timing chain and sprockets. Test for end play on the camshaft and if it's not within the allowable range, install a new thrust plate. Insert the oil pump and oil pick up tube and be sure to return each reused tappet into its first spot; if you have swapped the camshaft, each tappet needs replacing. For engines with MDS, both standard and deactivating roller tappets should be used in cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7, located by the two holes on the side of each tappet. After that, add the tappets and retaining yoke assembly and then bolt on the left and right cylinder heads, the pushrods and
Rocker Arms. Place back the timing case cover, oil pan, the covers over the cylinder heads, intake manifold,
A/C Compressor, generator, accessory drive belt, radiator, assembly for the air cleaner and at last reattach the negative cable from the battery. When both are full, start the engine and see if any leaks are visible.
