- Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft on Dodge Nitro?A:Before handling the steering shaft on 3.7L and diesel cars, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, remove the cover on the knee blocker and take off the knee blocker as well. Know that some vehicles with automatic transmissions won't have an internal locking shaft for the ignition key, meaning you'll need to find another way to lock the steering wheel straight ahead. Secure the steering wheel and after that remove the bolt at the bottom of the steering column. Lower down the steering coupler shaft from the column and then push the four tabs holding the intermediate shaft seal to remove it. Pull off the nuts holding the intermediate shaft support bearing and then use a ratchet with an extension to unbolt the center support bearing bracket from the shock tower mount. If removing the bracket, take out the nuts from the shock tower as well. After that, unscrew the lower coupler pinch bolt at the steering gear and loosen the coupler at the steering gear. Remove the vehicle's intermediate shaft and gently remove the support bearing from the steering shaft when the shaft is being changed.
