- Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Gear Seal on a Diesel on Dodge Ram 1500?A:First, take apart the steering gear from the pitman arm and afterward loosen the steering gear box to start with its service. Install the steering gear into a soft jaw bench vise and brush away any debris from the end of the pitman shaft and housing. Use a 12 point socket to rotate the input shaft, measure the number of turns during each rotation and then center it by rotating it halfway that many times. Unscrew the bolts that hold the pitman shaft cover shield in place, center the pitman shaft using the centermark lines on the stock and remove the shaft from the gear. Take care not to scratch the housing bore while using adapter tool 8990 to remove the seal from the housing. Now, get your snap ring pliers and take off the retaining ring, before removing the washer form the housing. Attach a slide hammer seal remover adapter tool 8990 with wrenches and together with a slide hammer puller C-3752, gently pull the oil seal out from the housing.
- Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Gear Seal on Dodge Ram 2500?A:The pitman shaft seal can only be serviced after first separating the pitman arm from the gear box and taking out the steering gear box. After gripping the steering gear in a bench vise, brush the exposed ends of the pitman shaft and housing with a wire brush. Use a 12 point socket to turn the input shaft all the way from the start to the end. Count how many times you rotate it, then rotate it back to the stop halfway using that number. After undoing the pitman shaft cover bolts, place the cover to one side and pull the shaft to make sure it is centered and not fitting into the housing before removing the shaft itself. Remove the dust seal from the housing using tool 8990, being sure not to score the housing bore while you do it. Grab the retaining ring with the snap ring pliers and then get out the washer from inside the housing. Clamp the slide hammer adapter 8990 around the seal while using wrenches to ensure a secure connection before sliding the oil seal out of the housing with tool 8990 and slide hammer C-3752. Generously coat the sections between the pitman shaft bearing and oil seals and also between the dust seals and snap ring, with high temperature grease before installation. Put high temp grease on the oil seal and washer before installing the seal so that the seal's lip points inward and is pushed against the washer. Attach the oil seal using tool 8989 and handle, then set in the back up washer and retainer ring using working pliers for snap rings. Spread high temp grease on the dust seal and fix it in place using the exact tools you used before. Cover the shaft with 8993 protective seal protector and push it into the upper bearing in the steering gear to lock it in place. Place and tighten new cover bolts to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.), attach and tighten the steering gear and pitman arm and finish with a wheel alignment.
