- Q: How to Service and Repair a Valve Stem Seal on Dodge Grand Caravan?A:The first thing to do when servicing the valve stem seal is to make sure the fuel system is not pressurized. Remove the cable connected to the battery's negative side, then uncover the air cleaner and its hose and take off the upper intake manifold. After that, remove both the cylinder head covers and spark plugs and take apart the electrical connector from the ignition coils. Screw a socket and flex handle onto the crankshaft pulley retaining screw and turn the engine while checking the piston position. Take out the rocker arms together with the rocker shaft and fit a dummy shaft to keep the rocker arms in their present positions. Attach an air hose to the air hole in your number 1 spark plug adapter and fill the engine with 90 to 100 psi air pressure (620.5 to 689 kPa) to secure the valves during service work. As an alternative, use Tool C-4682 or any other equivalent to pull back the valve spring and remove the retainer valve locks and spring. Guide the intake valve stem seal onto the valve guide by pressing directly on its stem and don't force it against the top. Only press on the spring when installing the locks to prevent it from pressing down on the seal between the retainer and the top of the valve guide. Finish the procedure for each of the remaining five cylinders, working in sequence 1-2-3-4-5-6 and making sure the piston of the cylinder matches the valve spring you are servicing. Once that is complete, pull out the spark plug adapter tool, put away the dummy shaft and install the rocker shaft assembly, keeping the screws tightened to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Uncover the cylinders and install the head covers, screwing them in until the torque from your tool matches 14 Nm (120 in. lbs.). The next step is to fit the intake manifold and afterwards, reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Q: How to Service and Repair a Valve Stem Seal on Dodge Viper?A:It is necessary to do the fuel system pressure release procedure before attempting to repair or service the valve stem seal. First, remove the negative battery cable and then take out the secondary ignition wires, spark plugs and cylinder head covers. Following that, separate the wire from the ignition coils. With a suitable socket and handle on the crankshaft pulley retaining screw, turn the engine until you reach TDC on the compression stroke for piston No. 1. Lift out the rocker arms with pivots so the rest of the parts are not affected and be sure to leave the rocker arms on their pivots. Use an air hose connected to the spark plug adapter in No. 1 hole and pump 90 to 100 psi air pressure to keep the valves down for servicing. Use the proper device to press the valve spring and take out the locks and springs from the valve retainer. Make sure the intake and exhaust stem seals are in place over the valve guide by using the stem as your guide to push them in place. Be sure to compress or bend the spring only enough for the locking screws to fit into the retainer and try not to pinch the seal between the retainer and the top of the valve guide. Perform the same procedure again on the seven other cylinders, as long as the piston is at TDC for every cylinder where the valve spring will be removed. After that, remove the spark plug adapter tool, fix the rocker arm and pedestal assemblies and tighten the bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Later on, you should install the cylinder head covers and tighten their bolts following the guide; afterwards, put in the spark plugs and the secondary ignition wires.
