- Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on Dodge Dakota?A:Begin by cleaning the valves entirely and remove those that appear burned, warped or cracked. Eliminate carbon and varnish within the valve guides by spraying them with a good cleaner. If the valve stems are more than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch) from their original measurements, replace them. Install the Valve Guide Sleeve Tool C-3973 on the valve stem and use the dial indicator Tool C-3339 on the cylinder head so that it is at right angles to the valve stem. Check that the reading on the gauge does not put you above 0.432 mm (0.017 inch), when adjusting the valve by moving from and to the indicator position. For readings that are high or when stems are marked, ream oversize-stemmed valve guides in two steps: first to your usual reaming size, then to 0.381 mm (0.015 inch). Valves should be set up with face angles between 43-1/4° and 43-3/4° and seat angles between 44-1/4° and 44-3/4°. After refacing, look at the remaining margin; toss away any valves that have less than 1.190 mm (0.047 inch) available. While refacing valve seats, ensure the valve guide pilot you're using is the same size for true reseating. Measure the concentricity of the valve seat using a dial indicator and make sure the total runout is not greater than 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Spray Prussian blue on the valve and look at the seat afterwards to see where the transfer takes place. Adjust the seat as required. The proper width for intake seats is 1.016 - 1.524 mm (0.040 - 0.060 inch) and for exhaust seats it should be 1.524 - 2.032 mm (0.060 - 0.080 inch). Any time you remove a valve, test the valve spring using the Universal Valve Spring Tester Tool at a compression length of 1-5/16 inches. Calibrate the torque wrench on a fully assembled tone device, multiply your reading by 2 for the spring load at test length and discard any springs that fail the test.
