Jeep Commander Spark Plug Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install Spark Plug(s) on engines other than the 4.7L V-8 on Jeep Commander?
    A:
For the installation of spark plugs (except 4.7L V-8 engines), first, apply a silicone-based grease, such as Mopar(R) Dielectric Grease # J8126688, to the spark plug end of the rubber boots of the ignition coil and the tops of the spark plugs. The spark plug gap can be measured and adjusted using a gap gauging tool to do the same. It should match the Spark Plug Specifications. Start the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand, taking care not to cross-thread it. Don't drop the plugs into the plug wells. This could damage the plugs' electrodes. Always tighten spark plugs to the specified torque since some torque-sensitive spark plugs are used in engine application. Over-tightening the plug will distort it, causing the spark plug gap to change or cracking the porcelain insulator. When the spark plugs are tightened, it is time to put on the ignition coil(s). Then, reattach the air filter tubing and air intake to the top of the engine and also the throttle body.
  • Q: How to service the Spark Plug(s) in a 3.7L engine on Jeep Commander?
    A:
In order to service the spark plugs in a 3.7L engine requires removal of air filter tubing and air intake at throttle body. The left bank of three spark plugs will be beneath individual ignition coils that have to be removed for access to the spark plugs. Before removing the ignition coil, spray compressed air around the base of the coil at cylinder head. Subsequently, take out the ignition coil, check the condition of the ignition coil O-ring and replace it if necessary. Before removing the spark plug, blow compressed air through the cylinder head opening so that nothing enters the combustion chamber. Use a quality thin wall socket with a rubber or foam insert to remove the spark plug from the cylinder head. Inspect the spark plug.
