Jeep Commander Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove the Ignition Coil from a 3.7L Engine on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Begin by determining which ignition coil needs to be accessed, because you might have to take off the intake tube or box to get better access. Place pressure on the top unlocking switch with your finger and then pull the electrical connector out from the coil. Be sure to blow compressed air at the area at the base of the coil before continuing. After that, gently remove the coil mounting nut from the mounting stud. Pull the coil up slowly from the cylinder head opening while using a little twisting motion. Take the coil out of the vehicle at last. This coil is for two cylinders, secured to the top of the Intake Manifold by a stud or nut, with a rubber boot connecting the spark plug to the coil which also has a spring inside for contact. The rubber boot and spring cannot be serviced apart from the rest of the coil assembly.
  • Q: How to install an Ignition Coil in a 3.7L Engine on Jeep Commander?
    A:
It helps to blow compressed air around the top of the spark plug before you install the ignition coil. Examine the rubber boot's condition (4) and grease the spark plug end of the boot and the top of the spark plug with Mopar(R) Dielectric Grease # J8126688 before installation. Move the coil (1) on top of the cylinder head, inserting it into the opening and align the base of the coil over the mounting stud as you push the spark plug onto the coil. Fit and tighten the coil mounting stud nut (2) to 8 Nm (70 in.lbs). After that, attach the electrical cable to the coil by simply snapping it into place and if need be, set back the throttle body air intake tube or intake air box.
