2002 Jeep Liberty Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft Seal on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first thing to do is take out the timing belt to work on the camshaft oil seal. As you remove the center bolt, hold each camshaft sprocket in place with Special Tool 6847 and after the bolt is out, remove the camshaft sprockets. Subsequently, get rid of the exhaust camshaft target ring and sensor, look for high wear on them and then superficially clean the sensor's face and add a new spacer pad. With the rear timing belt cover removed, use Special Tool C-4679-a to get out the camshaft seal, making sure not to harm either the seal's surface or the seal bore. Make sure the installation surface of the shaft seal is clean, free of varnish and dirt and polish it with 400 grit paper if it still has nicks on it. Guide the camshaft seals into place on the cylinder head using Special Tool Md-998306 so they are even with the top of the head. Connect the rear timing belt cover, so that the target tab fits firmly and correctly onto the camshaft. Put the exhaust camshaft target ring with Front on top and then install the exhausted camshaft sensor afterward. Place in the camshaft sprockets, holding them with Special Tool 6847, tighten the center bolt of each to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) and conclude by fastening the timing belt and front covers.
