2004 Dodge Dakota Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: For each spark plug, a separate ignition coil is installed by fitting the coil into machine holes in the cylinder head and securing it with a top mounting stud/nut to the intake manifold. At the bottom of the coil is a rubber boot that closes the spark plug and a spring provides contact between the coil and the spark plug; you cannot service these parts separately. To close off the top of the coil in the cylinder head, an O-ring is used. Sometimes, removing the air intake tube or box is necessary to reach the coil. To disconnect the connector from the coil, press the release button down and gently pull away the connector. Before you remove the coil mounting nut from the stud, use compressed air to clean the base of the coil. With a slight twist of the coil, pull it out of the cylinder head through the opening and out of your vehicle. Blow away any dirt from around the spark plug's upper part before installing and if the O-ring on the coil is worn, replace it and coat it with silicone to help fit it. Push the coil into the cylinder head aperture, steering the base of the coil onto the mounting stud as you set the coil over the spark plug. Attach the coil mounting stud nut in the amount of torque required by the manufacturer and snap the electrical connector into place. If you must, install the throttle body air tube or box again.
