2005 Dodge Dakota Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an Individual Ignition Coil on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: On each spark plug, an individual ignition coil fits securely into a machined hole in the cylinder head and is held by a mounting stud/nut on top of the intake manifold. There's a rubber boot at the coil's bottom that seals the spark plug and a spring to ensure the coil touches the spark plug. Rubber boots and springs live inside the coil and are never serviced individually, using an O-ring to seal it where it enters the cylinder head. The coil is sometimes hidden within the throttle body air intake assembly which may need to be removed to access it. Push the release lock down and then pull the electrical connector away from the coil. Spray compressed air around the base of the coil and remove the coil mounting nut afterward. Hold the coil near the opening in the cylinder head, twist it slightly and pull it out of the vehicle. Be sure to use compressed air to clear away dirt from around the spark plug and inspect the O-ring on the coil. If it looks worn, put in a new one. For easier installation, cover the coil O-ring with silicone, put the ignition coil into the hole in the cylinder head and press it onto the spark plug as you line up the coil base over the stud. Put on the coil mounting stud nut and snap the electrical connector onto the engine. If you have to, install the throttle body air tube again.
