2004 Dodge Durango Evaporator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Rear Evaporator Core on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: When changing the rear evaporator core, remove the rear HVAC housing and set it on a workbench first. Remove the rear HVAC wire harness from the rear blower motor, as well as from the rear blower motor resistor block. Take the screws out of the rear air inlet housing and remove it from the rear HVAC housing. Free the insulator covering the rear A/C evaporator tubes to gain access to the two A/C expansion valve bolts. After removing the bolts that connect the A/C evaporator tubes to the rear A/C components, lift the rear A/C evaporator up and out of the rear HVAC housing. Eliminate the rear A/C expansion valve from the tapping connection on the rear evaporator extension tube and toss out the rings or gasket seals in the rear A/C evaporator tubes and connected fittings. Make sure you either insert plugs into or combine the tube fittings with tape and treat all of the expansion valve entryways with the same method. When installing a new rear A/C evaporator, add 30 milliliters of the recommended resolution oil for that compressor to the refrigeration system. Feed the connector at the top of the new evaporator into the rear HVAC housing, remove tape or plugs from the four opened fittings and the four rear expansion valve ports, then release the pressure from all tubes. Apply clean refrigerant oil to new rubber O-ring seals made of special material and attach them at both ends of the tube fittings. Attach the rear A/C expansion valve between the rear A/C evaporator tubes and the tapping block of the rear extension tube, using both bolts and make sure they are tightened to 11 Nm. Place a new insulator around the rear evaporator tubes, install the rear air inlet housing onto the rear HVAC housing, then tighten four screws to 2 Nm. Electrically connect the rear HVAC wire harness to both the rear blower motor and the rear blower motor resistor, then put the rear HVAC housing back into place.
