2005 Jeep Liberty Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Faulty or Damaged Side Curtain Air Bag on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: When replacing a side curtain air bag, cut off electric power, isolate the battery negative cable and wait for two minutes to allow the system capacitor to discharge. Take out the trim on the inside of the B-pillar and pull the headliner from inside the vehicle. Subsequently, remove the screw holding the side curtain air bag tether retainer onto the A-pillar base and pull open the tether retainer clip. Release the side curtain air bag pigtail wire from the body wire harness connector and loosen the three pigtail wire clips from the base of the B-pillar. Take out the three screws holding the side curtain air bag manifold tube brackets to the U-nuts in the roof rail, as well as the two screws that lock the side curtain air bag inflator bracket in place. Use the dark handles in the center of the plastic side curtain air bag channel to pull the entire curtain away from the roof rail which will undo all four plastic fasteners and let you remove the air bag from the vehicle. During installation, fit the side curtain air bag inside the vehicle, line up and snap the four plastic fasteners into the roof side rail all the way and secure the lower and upper screws for the side curtain air bag bracket to the U-nut at 12 N.m (105 in.lbs). Beginning at the rear, attach and tighten all three fitting screws holding the side curtain air bag manifold tube brackets to the U-nuts installed in the roof rail panel to 12 N.m (105 in.lbs) as you work forward. Run the side curtain air bag pigtail wire down the trough above the extruded plastic air bag channel on the roof side rail, then down the B-pillar, where it must be behind the air bag channel. Build the three pigtail wire retainer clips onto the B-pillar and reattach the pigtail wire connector to the body wire harness connector nearby. Click the side curtain air bag tether plastic retainer clip into the A-pillar socket, then attach and fasten the screw securing the tether retainer to the pillar base near the belt line to 14 N.m (120 in.lbs). Place the headliner and the lower trim on the inside of the B-pillar, but do not hook up the battery negative cable yet, because a supplemental restraint system test has to be done after servicing any air bag part.
