2006 Chrysler Pacifica Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Manually Bleed Aerated Oil from a Lash Adjuster to Remove Sponginess on 2006 Chrysler Pacifica?
A: To handle frothy oil pressure and spongy feel at valve clearance, run the engine to its operating heat, then uncover the cylinder heads. Set the rocker arm on the bottom circle of the cam, turning the engine when needed. To set the rocker arm positions, set the gauge pin on Special Tool 8351 Release Probe to stand out about 20 mm (0.787 inch) and carefully direct it into the lash adjuster's service access hole. Should the tip of the probe become detached after adjusting the lash, then change that rocker arm. First, remove the internal check ball in the lash adjuster and place the rocker arm into the valve tip to collapse the whole lash adjuster, holding it there for approximately one second or more. Once the rocker arm has stopped, slowly take your hand off to allow the lash adjuster to extend and top up the high-pressure oil chamber, then take out the probe to allow the check ball to close. Continue the process with another pile until the sponginess is removed. Should the spongy rocker arm(s) remain, change them. When adjusting exhaust rocker arms, insert two Special Tool 8351 Release Probe gauge pins about 20 mm (0.787 inch) and carefully put them into the access holes of the lash adjuster. First, carefully take out the two check balls in the lash adjuster, then push the rocker arm into the valve to collapse the entire lash adjuster for a moment or two. As the rocker arm rises, let go slowly so that the lash adjuster can lengthen and refill the oil chamber and afterward, withdraw the probes to let the check balls fit into position. If the sponginess remains or almost so, repeat the baking until it is gone. Should the sponginess not be removable, change the rocker arm(s) that are affected. After that, add the cylinder head cover(s).
