2006 Dodge Durango Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Brake Light Switch on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: When performing brake light switch service, turn off the supplemental restraint system in vehicles with air bags by removing the battery negative cable and waiting for two minutes. The brake lamp switch has a plunger that responsively changes as pressure is applied; replace the plunger if you pull it from the switch. Open by loosening the negative battery cable and finding the brake lamp switch next to the steering column bracket. Remove the wire harness connector from the brake lamp switch and then by turning the switch housing clockwise about 30 degrees, join the tabs on the locking collar with the keyhole in the bracket. Simply pull the switch back toward you to disconnect and you can throw the old switch away. Press down on the brake pedal and connect the tabs found on the locking collar with the keyed hole in the switch mount bracket. Then keep pressing down until the switch housing is secure. Counterclockwise rotation of the switch housing for about 30 degrees will cause the mounting tabs to be inserted in the mounting bracket. Until you finish the switch plunger adjustment, do not release the brake pedal. When you release the brake pedal without raising it, turn the plunger adjustment release lever clockwise until it fits snuggly with the brake lamp connector receptacle. After doing this, the switch plunger length is set and cannot be changed; if done wrong, a new switch is required. Once that is done, link back the brake lamp switch to the wire harness and reconnect the negative battery cable.
